Seagate 7200.11 HD unbricking with Mac and Arduino

Unbricking the Seagate 7200.11 !Tb drive with the firmware BSY bug. I use an iBook G4 running Zterm terminal program with an Arduino board for the USB to serial TTL conversion (the ATMEGA328 is removed). Mine had SD81 firmware. It was successful. I power the HD with a IDE to SATA power cable, powered from another IDE firewire case/power supply. The seagate drive was actually from a MAXTOR ONE TOUCH 4 external drive. Just Google the BSY error fix Terminal instructions. You can't use Terminal in MAC OSX . Just use ZTERM and you need a USB to serial interface that uses a FTDI USB to serial interface chip which is conveniently provided by an SB-Freeduino (Arduino clone) board by Solarbotics (remove the Atmel microcontroller first). Other USB to serial interfaces work too but you'll need to convert the RS232 level to 3.3 V level via another chip . The serial interface on the Seagate HD runs only at 3.3V logic level, not +/- 12V like RS232. Those connectors on the Seagate HD are tiny!

I needed an external hard drive to backup all my files through Time Machine. I chose this cause I kind of got it at a good price. The original price was RM278/£53/$84, but I managed to bargain with the shop to give me a price of RM250/£48/$75. And the one I have was the last one in stock! I do plan on getting another external hard drive soon, but not for Time Machine, just as a normal storage device. This unboxing video was filmed on the 31st of December 2008. Maxtor one touch 4 stopped working, makes that noise when i turn it on and when i connect the usb it does not get recognized by windows.
